The Kiyosato Museum of Contemporary Art was a private museum that opened in Kiyosato, Yamanashi Prefecture in 1990 and closed in 2014. This book, focusing exclusively on the museum’s “Ephemera” collection, is the first volume of a series of archival books on the museum’s collection.

This volume includes the works of Yutaka Matsuzawa, Claes Oldenburg, Cy Twombly, Daniel Buren, Donald Judd, Ellsworth Kelly, Hanne Darboven, John Cage, Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, stanley brouwn, Tony Cragg, Wolfgang Laib, and many others.

For over 33 years, the Amsterdam gallery Art & Project (1968–1998) was a focal point in the development of contemporary art in the Netherlands. Featuring artists such as stanley brouwn, Hanne Darboven, Daniel Buren, Marcel Broodthaers, Ian Wilson, Bas Jan Ader, Yutaka Matsuzawa, Jan Dibbets, Gilbert & George, Richard Long, Ger van Elk, Charlotte Posenenske, and Lawrence Weiner.

To draw attention to their exhibitions, Art & Project produced a total of 156 bulletins. These bulletins soon became an experimental medium, becoming a vehicle for the ideas of conceptual artists and sometimes functioned as a conceptual work of art in its own right.

Riffing off the title, this volume includes an interview with Carolyn Lazard—an artist whose conceptual and often spare videos, sculptures, installations, and performances explore the full amplitude of relation—by Catherine Damman, plus a feature on New York-based contemporary artist Tishan Hsu, whose practice examines the “embodiment of technology”, and contributions by time-based media artist Silvia Kolbowski, for whom political resistance, the unconscious, and structures of spectatorship are a central concern of all her projects; choreographer and dancer Yvonne Rainer; and science fiction author Octavia Butler. Edited with Kathrin Bentele, Anna Gritz, and Ghislaine Leung. Soon after completing her studies in Hamburg and embarking upon a two-year sojourn in New York, Darboven created “sketch sheets” on graph paper – early drafts of what would later form a system she would “write herself into” over the course of the ensuing years. In the letters written to her family during this time she goes yet a step farther. More firmly anchored in her own private sphere, they serve as a “lifeline” in her quest for objectivity in her existence through the medium of words and messages: encounters, questions regarding her own identity, her art and her efforts to come to terms with the self reflected in it. These letters from New York, which form both the core and the point of departure for important aspects of Hanne Darboven’s oeuvre, are reproduced in facsimile and in their entirety in this publication.
