For the first volume in The Leporello Series, Heimo Zobernig makes optimal use of the accordion format, allowing rhythmic wording and typography to seamlessly transcend from individual words and phrases to shapes and structure.

Inhabiting a space between book and paper sculpture, the leporellos are printed on delicate Mohawk Superfine Eggshell paper. Each volume in the series is limited to 250 numbered copies and come in a bespoke rigid box, with the title hot foiled both on its front and on its spine, allowing it to sit comfortably in a bookshelf when not on display.

Heimo Zobernig is an Austrian artist widely acclaimed for his works in a variety of media, ranging from painting and sculpture to video, performance and site specific installation and design.

Hei­mo Zobernig’s ex­per­i­men­tal ap­proach to the con­cept of sculp­ture of­ten leads him to pre­vi­ous­ly un­ex­plored boun­daries be­tween art and ar­chi­tec­ture or de­sign. For in­s­tance, he de­vel­oped two large-scale, black in­s­tal­la­tions for the floor and ceil­ing of the Aus­trian pav­ilion at the Venice Bien­nale in 2015, which play­ful­ly ques­tion the re­la­tion­ship be­tween bodies in space. Part of this rad­i­cal yet min­i­mal­ist in­s­tal­la­tion was trans­ferred to the Mu­se­um Lud­wig where he full-scale re­pli­ca served as a pedes­tal for the mu­se­um’s sculp­ture col­lec­tion. This succinct place­ment can be read as a hu­mor­ous and iron­ic com­men­tary on col­lec­tions and artis­tic self-con­cep­tion.

Flyer produced on the occasion of Apropos Papier: Willem Oorebeek, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Heimo Zobernig at the Leopold Hoesch Museum, 7 April–7 July, 2019

Apropos Papier is an exhibition series that started at the Leopold Hoesch Museum in 2018 to coincide with the reopening of the neighbouring Paper Museum in Düren. This series presents international artists whose work is characterised by the examination of paper, an important material for the city of Düren.

Produced following the film project Conceptual Paradise, for which Stefan Römer conducted numerous interviews with internationally outstanding artists and art theorists for four years.
