Uneven Bodies (Reader) is a comprehensive collection of writing produced as an outcome of a symposium of the same name held in Aotearoa New Zealand in early 2020 that addresses the politics of collections today and the complex terrain of power in which this conversation sits. Presenting the largest number of collection works ever shown at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, including treasured highlights, the project seeks to break (open) the mechanisms of collecting and challenges the role and success of the museum. If a collection is meant to reflect the society that creates it, there are problems with the methodologies if amongst this highly regarded collection, so few perspectives are captured.

This conflict in motion is made visible through the lens of a gallery collection, and provides a crucial course alteration for the future. Here, the collection becomes the scene, and the body in attendance is dynamically addressed, and each of us – the institution, the visitor, and the artist herself are implicated in what these future procedures may be.

Produced on the occasion of Lexicon of Infinite Movement, at the Kröller Müller Museum, 18 May 2019 – 15 September 2019, the first Dutch museum solo exhibition of Charlotte Posenenske.

The works of Charlotte Posenenske (Wiesbaden, 1930-Frankfurt am Main, 1985) consist of series in an unlimited edition. According to a number of rules, they can be made and repeated – also by others – and combined with each other. With her radical and ‘democratic’ ideas about material, production and authorship, Charlotte Posenenske influenced and shaped conceptual and minimalist art of the sixties.

Curated by Suzanne Wallinga and Eloise Sweetman and featuring the work of Ruth Buchanan (New Plymouth, 1980) and Yeb Wiersma (Groningen, 1973) in reaction to the work of Charlotte Posenenske.

Produced on the occasion of Ruth Buchanan’s exhibition Dead Marble at Artspeak, Vancouver June 9–July 28, 2018.

In 1958, weaver Ilse von Randow was commissioned to produce a major work of woven curtains for the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki in New Zealand. Her ‘Auckland Art Gallery Curtains’ became the largest piece of hand weaving created in New Zealand. In her first presentation of work in North America, Dead Marble revisits von Randow’s curtain, and the newly designed Auckland Art Gallery sculpture court (1953) in which they were hung, as a departure point to reconfigure the complex relationships between gendered representations, institutional hierarchies and the burden of inherited legacies.

BAD VISUAL SYSTEMS is an extension of the exhibition with the same title held at the Adam Art Gallery, Wellington, New Zealand in late 2016. Through paying close attention to both colour and texture the publication brings together elements seen in the show and transforms and reconfigures them into the framework of the A4 page: the tongues of Judith Hopf’s concrete serpents become cartoon-style cut outs, Ruth Buchanan’s 13m long banner of wavy lines becomes a place holder that repeats throughout the book while Marianne Wex’s work is discussed in detail in a new essay by Mike Sperlinger.
