This comprehensive monograph ventures a look at Vivian Suter’s complete works, bringing together early drawings, painterly wall reliefs from the 1980s, and her latest work from her studio in the tropical rainforest of Guatemala: loose canvases hanging lightly from the ceiling in atmospherically dense installations. The richly illustrated catalog illuminates the interplay between unpredictable natural influences as the paintings are left outside open to the elements and purposeful artistic work in Suter’s practice. Produced on the occasion of the 2009 ars viva prize for fine arts. Mariana Castillo Deball, Jay Chung & Q Takeki Maeda, and Dani Gal examine historical fragments, documents, and objects in a new light. The artists take on the roles of amateur archaeologists as they work with found objects and fragments; even though it is clear that all display an obvious interest in historical objects, instead of providing any sort of conclusion regarding history as a whole they play an associative game, which formally resembles Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Atlas, while reflecting upon personal encounters with objects and places.

An elaborate artist book with 18 cards, loosely bound by a weaver knot.

Richard Tuttle has worked in close collaboration with the Kunsthaus Zug as the “in-house artist” for almost twenty years. Through fragile, mostly small, subtle paintings as well as sculptural objects and three-dimensional installations, he continues to explore special features of the museum’s architecture or selected works from its collection. Tuttle poses questions about endurance and continuity, rhythm and repetition in the various cultures of contemporary global society.
